UK is planning to test driverless cars on public roads by the end of this year.
Oxford University's Nissan Leaf-based RobotCars will be tested on roads with less traffic and humans. Until now, the cars were tested only on lonely places.
A system of sensors and cameras help the driverless cars to work efficiently. "They maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front at a set speed and without deviating from their lane - all without the driver's input," according to the report by the Department for Transport.
However, a backup driver will be there to take the control in case of emergency.
